Origami on Christmas lights – makes a beautiful decor

DIY Origami. Decoration balls for christmas lights. With PDF template and silhouette cut file

Christmas lights! YAY! I love them, and I would have them in our apartment all year round. Last week I was our looking for some Christmas inspiration for decorating the apartment in December, when I came across some fairy lights with origami balls.

I fell in love with them, but I thought the price was too high (I’m cheap!!) and also that it would be a fun project to do.

So I sat down and designed the shape for my silhouette to cut and began making the string of lights. We have put it above the bed, and the soft lights are perfect for the dark mornings and the lights look so pretty every time I walk into the room.

I don’t know what it is about fairy lights, but they give such a warm and cozy feeling. I think it is a winner – what do you think?

If you would like to make the project as well, here is the origami template that I made for the silhouette. If you don’t have a cutting machine you can also just print out this Origami template for printing and score the lines like I did in the diamond necklace tutorial. Once you have cut the template and scored the lines the rest is the same.

Now folding can be a bit tricky and the first time it will take some time, but once you get the first fold right, you will begin to see a pattern and the rest will be done in no time.

I hope these pictures will help you to see how to fold the little origami ball.

How to fold an origami ball

Once you have folded the template you just loop some thread through the holes and then glue the folded piece of paper shut. You can also use some double sided tape for this.

Once the glue is dry you can pull in the thread and the ball will form. If you want to form the balls over a string of lights, like me, then just put the light inside the paper and then pull. Tie of the thread  in a knot and cut.

Make sure that the lights you are using are LED, to make sure they aren’t a fire hazard in your home. Be safe!

What did you think about this project? I would love to hear your thoughts.
